York Big Band Initiative
The audience at Melodies Park had a real treat last Tuesday night when they arrived to hear the first performance of York Music Service Big Band Initiative.

After some atmospheric accordion music to welcome them in (from Julie Thornley), the Ian Chalk Quartet played a masterful set – as usual - to an appreciative crowd to get things moving.

Sax Section
A quick change over, and the main event
York Big Band Initiative – took to the stage.

If there were any first time nerves here, they certainly didn’t show, as the band tackled a varied programme of standards and originals. Under the lead trumpet of Lance Elcock, the brass section provided a well-balanced ‘wall of sound’, with confident trumpet solos from Josh Elcock.

Katey Maloney Solos
The saxes showed a fantastic range of tone and dynamics, with careful intonation across the section.
Great soloing here from Katy Maloney (alto) and John Lane (tenor) and some excellent saxophone features from Clare Oates on baritone, and Steve Jones on tenor.

Underpinned by a sterling rhythm section, including guitar solos from Ben Huntley, this was an amazingly tight set from such a new group. It’s difficult to believe that they’ve only been playing together for six months!
